The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races sponsored by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. Since its inception in 1984, it has been a single-day event, but will expand to two days starting in 2006, pending regulatory approval. The location changes each year. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.
The event was created as a year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, and also attracts top horses from other parts of the world, especially Europe. The Breeders' Cup was founded in 1982 by John R. Gaines, a leading thoroughbred owner and breeder. Depending on one's definition of "sport", it is either the richest or second-richest day in sports, worth $18 million in prize money in 2006 and rising to $20 million for the second day of the 2007 event. The other possible contender for "richest day in sports" is the final table of the main event of the World Series of Poker, in which nearly $38 million in prize money was awarded in 2006.
The 2009 Breeders' Cup
will repeat last years schedule, that will have a total of
14 races spread over two days of racing with $25.5 million
in purse money on the line.
Friday November 6th will
have six races with the Marathon first then all the distaff
divisions, headlined by the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Ladies
Classic (formerly the Breeders' Cup Distaff) worth $2
million.
Saturday November 7th will
have eight races headlined by the $5 million Breeders' Cup
Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles. The Marathon, which was
lengthened this year to 1 3/4 miles, was moved from Saturday
to Friday to allow for an all Breeders' Cup Pick Six on both
days. The two-day event will be televised live on ESPN.
Last year
in 2008, Raven's Pass ran 1¼ miles in a track record
1:59.27 under Frankie Dettori, who won two races Saturday.
So did Princess Haya of Jordan, who co-owns Raven's Pass,
and John Gosden, who trains the winner.
Sent off at 13-1 odds, Raven's Pass paid $29, $15.80 and $8.
Henrythenavigator, also based in Europe, returned $22 and
$11.20, while Tiago was another three-quarters of a length
back in third and paid $7 to show.
