Barbaro Remains Perfect With Dominating 6 1/2-Length Victory In 132nd Kentucky Derby

A hard-charging Barbaro swept to the lead at the top of stretch and drew away for one of
the more impressive wins in Kentucky Derby history as he powered to a 6 ˝-length
victory over WinStar Farm’s Bluegrass Cat in the 132nd “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs,
giving trainer Michael Matz his first Derby victory and jockey Edgar Prado his first winning ride.
Barbaro beat a full field of 20 3-year-olds in what was considered one of the toughest in years.

With Sinister Minister and Keyed Entry setting the pace, Barbaro settled in right behind after
stumbling briefly at the start. He made his move around the far turn, just as he had in winning
his first five races. Sent off as the 6-1 second choice by the crowd of 157,536 — the second largest
in Derby history — Barbaro covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.36 and paid $14.20, $8.00 and $6.00.
Well off Secretariat's record of 1:59 2/5 in 1973. Barbaro became the sixth undefeated winner,
following Smarty Jones in 2004. Barbaro scored his victory in the $2 million Kentucky Derby
presented by Yum! It was the fifth consecutive stakes victory for Barbaro, who had won the
Grade I Florida Derby in his previous start. He also banked the $1,240,000 million winner’s
share of the $2 million purse for his owners, increasing his lifetime earnings to $2,089,000.

If Barbaro goes on to win the Preakness in two weeks, the stage would be set for a fourth
Triple Crown try in the past five years at the Belmont Stakes on June 10. War Emblem in 2002,
Funny Cide in '03 and Smarty Jones in '04 each won the Derby and Preakness, but came up short
in the last race.

Second place finisher Bluegrass Cat put himself within four or five lengths
of the leader, but once Barbaro kick it into a higher gear, there would be no
hope for second place finisher Bluegrass Cat.
Third place finisher Steppenwolfer thought he was going to run his race, but Barbaro just ran out of the bridle.

The following are some general guidelines followed by many pros which will give you a 'leg up' on many other bettors (first four tips out of 11 basics):

1)When betting straight, restrict your bets to win and show only.

2)As a general rule, bet horses you like with odds of 5-1 or greater to win and odds of 5-1 or less, to place.

3)Pay close attention to horses' recent performances. Form handicapping has a lot of merit, and you face your best chances with a horse in top condition.
